It might be the middle of summer, but the wind is still cold and powerful over the cracked stone ground of the desert that has always been my home. I'm lying on my stomach, rolling tiny pieces of gravel into the cracks, and thinking. Thinking is not an activity condoned by the other Enhorne in my pack, or any other Enhorne, for that matter. They value those who take action--those who fight, provide, and conquer. I've never really been a female of action. But the other Enhorne in my pack are all off taking action together. Some of them are hunting for the little exoskeletoned creatures that scuttle among the rocks, some are on the lookout for enemies, and of course there are the usual groups searching for the remnants of other races left in Ortheng. I told them that I'd be hunting, too, but now that they're gone, I prefer to lay here with the little bit of sunlight shining on my back, planning.
It's been at least five or six years that we Enhorne have been searching for the Remnant. I personally don't believe in its existence, but even if I'm wrong, I still don't think we're going to find it. Wherever they are, they've done a wonderful job of hiding. No, I need to think of a new way to make myself stand out. I need to be clever. Even though cleverness isn't nearly as helpful as strength or bravery, it's all I have, so I need to use it as best I can to make up for what I lack.
Then it comes to me. It's not just the Remnant we're after anymore. We Enhorne have learned to hate all races besides our own. So I don't necessarily have to find the actual Remnant to show them what I'm worth. I just need to kill some people who aren't Enhorne. And I can start doing that almost anywhere.
A five-legged creature scrambles for a crack, but I'm faster. My tough hand comes down upon it. Its outer shell breaks with a slightly nauseating crunch, and its insides splat all over the unforgiving rock. I carefully scoop its remains into my palm. I suppose I'll have something to show for my "hunt" after all.
